The City of Windsor is seeking community input on the future of the Jackson Park Bandshell. To launch the public consultation process, a Public Information Centre (PIC) was held on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at the Optimist Community Centre. During this event, City representatives were available to answer questions and collect feedback from attendees. The PIC display boards can be viewed through the following link: Jackson Park Bandshell PIC Display Boards (15.7 MB)
In addition to the in-person event, the City of Windsor has launched an online survey to gather further input from the community. This survey provides an opportunity for residents to share their thoughts and suggestions on the future of the Jackson Park Bandshell. The survey will remain open until September 8, 2024, ensuring ample time for everyone to participate and contribute their feedback.
Stakeholders wishing to discuss specific ideas and opportunities regarding the future of the bandshell are welcome to contact the Parks Department at jacksonparkbandshell@citywindsor.ca. Individual and group meetings with City Administration will be available upon request from Wednesday, April 17, through Friday, September 6, 2024.
History of the Bandshell
1899 - the original Grandstand was built in Grosse Pointe, Michigan
1909 - the Grandstand was brought to Windsor to be reconstructed in the old Windsor Fairgrounds by the Windsor Jockey Club
1928 - the City of Windsor bought the Grandstand and parkland from the Jockey Club to create Jackson Park
shortly after World War Two, a bandshell was constructed to enhance the outdoor entertainment events in Jackson Park
1957 - one of the most devastating fires in Windsor's history completely destroyed both the Bandshell and the Grandstand
1959 - City Council approved the construction of the replacement bandshell in it's new location where it sits today
The new bandshell was used for many events throughout the 60's and 70's including the Emancipation Day festival and Windsor's Battle of the Bands.
